$700 Tax Refund for Homeowners
The Homestead program gives a property tax refund to homeowners who qualify. The amount is based on household income. It will be a percentage of the property tax that you pay. The maximum amount is $700.
You must meet these requirements to file a Homestead Claim:
- You own a home; AND
- You were a Kansas resident for the whole tax year; AND
- Your total household income is less than $37,750; AND
- At least one of these three things is true:
- You were over age 55 for the whole tax year; OR
- You are blind or have a permanent disability and you had it for the whole year; OR
- You have at least one dependent child under 18 that lived with you for the entire tax year
You are NOT eligible to file a Homestead Claim if…
- Your property is valued at more than $350,000
- You don’t have to pay property taxes on your home
For the 2020 tax year, you will need to complete the claim between January 1, 2022 and April 15, 2022. Do not do it before January 1, 2022. You can do it online or you can print it and mail it to the Kansas Department of Revenue (the address is on the form). If you do it online, it will let you know if there is a different claim that would be better for your household.
